Hong Kong’s cyber incidents call for robust protection

Last year alone 7,752 security incidents were recorded.

QBE is calling for robust cyber coverage for Hong Kong, amidst the rise of cyber incidents in April and May this year.

Last year alone, the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre handled a total of 7,752 security incidents. Amongst these, phishing incidents held nearly half of the cases. This was a double-digit (27%) surge from the previous year.

The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) reported a cyberattack that disrupted operations, though no data leaks were detected. The HKADC has activated its emergency response system and engaged cybersecurity experts for inspection and recovery.

The Companies Registry disclosed a data leak affecting 110,000 individuals, exposing personal details including names, contact information, and identification numbers.

The Fire Services Department revealed a potential data leak involving unauthorised access to the personal information of over 5,000 residents and staff.

The leaked data includes the details of individuals who reported incidents during Super Typhoon Saola in 2023. The department’s contractor is enhancing protective measures to prevent future breaches.

QBE also suggests five steps to implement good cyber hygiene:

  • Update Your Software Update your software regularly. In fact, set up automatic updates wherever possible.
  • Use Strong Passwords Use unique, complex passwords and ideally consider using a password manager to create and store your passwords securely.
  • Turn on Multifactor Authentication Implement multi-factor authentication for an extra layer of security on your accounts by requiring a second factor.
  • Think Before You Click Avoid suspicious links or opening attachments from unknown sources. Be wary of phishing email.
  • Educate Your Staff It is essential for every team member to understand and follow the basic principles of cybersecurity hygiene.  Regular training should be provided to appropriate employees.
