Taiwan bad loans climb to $2.24b in February

NPL ratio of all 39 domestic banks also increase to 0.18%.

After a slight drop in February, the non-performing loans (NPL) of Taiwan’s 39 domestic banks increase to $2.24b in February, according to statistics released by the Financial Supervisory Commission.

The average NPL ratio of all domestic banks increased by 0.02 percentage points, increasing the figure from 0.16% in January to 0.18%. However, this was 0.04 percentage points lower compared to the same month last year.

The coverage ratio of allowances for NPLs stood at 730.92% whilst the ratio decreased by 79.94 percentage points from 810.86% of the previous month, it still remained stable at a higher level. 

The FSC said that the asset quality of domestic banks continuously remained manageable. 

“The FSC will request banks to undertake measures to improve asset quality and financial structure on an ongoing basis,” the regulator said.

The total outstanding loans of all 39 domestic banks are at $1.22t by the end of February.
