FWD Philippines targets gamer insurance gaps

The country’s gaming community increased by 14.3% from 2020 to 2023.

Only 30% of Filipino gamers care about coverage, despite 85% stating the importance of having insurance whilst playing, revealed FWD Philippines.

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, FWD Philippine unravelled “Decoding the Pinoy Gamer,” which explores the behaviours, well-being, and financial practices of 943 Filipino gamers and esports enthusiasts.

"Supporting the gaming community – from developers, players, and fans – is part of our efforts to contribute to nation-building.” FWD Philippines Chief Marketing and Digital Business Officer, Roche Vandenberghe, said in a press release.

The Filipino gaming community, largely comprising Gen Z and millennials, grew by 14.3% from 2020 to 2023.

Gamers were categorised by their gaming duration, spending, and reasons for playing.

Fans (34%) and Casuals (30%) form the largest segments but play less frequently, while Enthusiasts (20%), Influencers (13%), and Pros (4%) are more active and spend more on games.

The rise of esports has led more Filipinos to pursue professional gaming, though this shift has also introduced challenges such as eye problems (41%), insomnia (17%), and migraines (15%).

The study highlights gamers' top priorities: Fans aim to build their own houses (73%), while Enthusiasts want to start businesses (70%).

Most gamers prioritise savings, followed by life insurance. However, only 3 in 10 gamers have an insurance policy, with 40% lacking sufficient knowledge to make informed decisions.

To address this, FWD Philippines launched an insurance product called The One for gamers and became the official insurer for pro esports athletes in the 12th season of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL-PH).

This initiative significantly increased FWD's gamer policyholders, demonstrating their commitment to empowering more Filipinos.
