ABF: What are your previous experiences and positions held that contributed to who you are as a banking expert today?
As the director of Products & Strategy at Fiserv, my role is focused on delivering strategic consultation to financial institutions, bringing the company’s innovation and expertise to help FIs achieve their business goals. I’ve been in the financial services industry for nearly 25 years and greatly enjoy the ride in this dynamic industry.
My background in operations - implementing core banking, channels, cards and payment solutions for banks across Asia Pacific - paved the way for me to take on a more consultative role in business intelligence and transaction banking systems in the last couple of years. Some of the highlights in my career, so far, were designing and developing the world’s first touch screen treasury dealing system and implementing Asia’s first image-based cheque clearing system.
ABF: What are your key business philosophies?
The rapid speed of technology advancement affects the way we live and work, and thus significantly raises the bar on expectations in the financial services sector. Banks no longer operate the way they did 10 years ago, many have adopted a multi-dimensional approach to solving their business needs. New lingo like “transformation”, “disruption”, and “agile” are rolling off the tongues of those in the fintech community, these terms were rarely used before.
I’ve always been inquisitive, keeping abreast of emerging technology inventions and trends. This positive trait has enabled me to be more aware of the environment, where we navigate the many challenges faced by banks and financial institutions, addressing their complex business issues which are not dissimilar (amongst organisations in the same industry). The subject matter almost always revolves around improving customer experience, being more digital and improving bottom lines.
I am a firm believer of creating and adding value, and thrive in an environment where I am able to convert clients to partners, providing them solutions that generate maximum benefits and returns that go beyond the technology investment.
I often repeat this to our clients - ‘think broadly, look far’ – working with partners providing the lowest cost option may not always be the best, nor cost-effective. Some partnerships may invariably lead up to higher cost in the long run outweighing benefits from initial low cost.
